Since 1999, the Hurley Bariatric Center has maintained its published record of low complication and mortality rates and has provided high quality care to over 4,000 patients across the state. The Hurley Bariatric Center has been recognized as a Center of Excellence by six separate accrediting entities, including the American College of Surgeons.
Problem
Hurley Bariatric Center, a division of premier Flint, Michigan hospital Hurley Medical Center, needed their own website. Currently a small section on the main site, they wanted an online presence that showcased their vision and practice, an attractive, easily accessible microsite that would create a community for users and a way to express information about news, updates, and events.
Solutions
Working with Hurley’s future site administrators, marketing team, and IT staff, Duo Consulting and Hurley chose Drupal for their content management system, feeling it would more than fulfill their immediate requirements as well as give them a good base for future updates and functionality. For the most part, the site was built using out of the box features and modules, with little customization needed; the exception being the extension of the webform module and some menus. Seminar listings, newsletters, and slideshows for both the tours of the facilities and program presentations were built out using Views, and Hurley’s clear sense of what they wanted let Duo to take advantage of Drupal’s rapid development environment.
The design process was somewhat more complex. After two full rounds and the purchase and heavy customization of a theme, the design team configured a homepage whose look and feel broke away sufficiently from the main site, and a clean, three-column page layout that would both suit the Bariatric microsite and provide a visual template for future microsites. The design also allowed for the incorporation of social networking and Google tools, and featured video content and image slideshows.
Results
Hurley’s cooperation and clear plans allowed Duo’s development team to really focus on building the site, and the project was completed in about six weeks. With a design and a back end system that can easily be adapted around future content, their site is an organizational tool for both the present and the future. This reflects itself externally in a website relevant to multiple audiences, where information is prominent but visually uncluttered, and finding who or what you need is efficient and intuitive.
